Last Sunday, we decided to rent a canoe and paddle around Lake Washington. This is one of those things we’ve been meaning to do ever since we moved here, but we just hadn’t gotten around to it yet. You can rent canoes from UW for really cheap. This was a great weekend to do it, because they closed the 520 bridge for its annual maintenance.

It was almost eerily quiet without all the 520 traffic. We canoed around the Arboretum, where we found lots of lily pads, ducks, and turtles. Our whole trip was a bird-watcher’s dream: we saw two Great Blue Herons, a couple of Kingfishers, and some red-wing blackbirds. Most impressively, we saw a pair of Bald Eagles. One of them swooped down in the water to snatch up a fish just a few yards away from other canoes. He then took his prize to a log near a little island to eat. There were several crows on the island, and one of them was very unhappy that the eagle was there, and kept divebombing him. The eagle just ignored the crow and ate his fish. He let us row up to 25 or 30 feet away before he flew away himself.
Here are some pictures – there are a whole bunch more on our gallery – they’re well worth a look!
